Vrable Retires; Gets Buckeye Coaching Job

Mike Vrabel, three time Super Bowl Champ and all-pro outside linebacker, announced his retirement after 14 seasons and his move to coach at his alma mater, The Ohio State University.

Vrabel attended Ohio State from 93-96 and was a two-time Big Ten defensive player of the year. He will be the linebackers coach.

A position recently held by former roommate Luke Fickell (now head coach & best friend).

Vrabel (35 years old) played for four years with the Steelers, eight years with the New England Patriots, and two years with the Chiefs.

Vrabel was traded to the Cheifs along with QB Matt Cassell.

Vrabel said that although his playing experience and having a lot of great coaching throughout his career has prepared him for this job, it was the recent two years spent coaching and leading young 21 year old players at the Cheifs that “that’s probably helped me the most”.

Coach Bill Belichick (head coach of New Patriots, who hold the longest winning streak in NFL history at 21) said: “Mike Vrabel is as well-suited for coaching as any player I have ever coached. He has a tremendous feel for people, players, coaches and what his team needs regardless of the situation.” (AP)

As much as Luke Fickell wanted to hire Vrabel, he still had a question. “Can you hire your best friend?”.

After debate and advice from respected coaches, Fickell decided to hire Vrabel. Vrabel will begin his first year of University coaching this season.
