Uncle Mo Will Not be Racing in Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is the most famous horse racing event of the year, and it is about to run today.

This year, instead of the originally planned 20 horses, only 19 horses will have the honor of advancing into the gates because the outstanding favorite, Uncle Mo, has been eliminated from the roster, as he has been stricken with a gastro-intestinal illness of some kind, leaving him unable to give 100%.

Uncle Mo, a beautiful, bay thoroughbred 2 year-old champion was diagnosed by vets, as having a gastrointestinal infection requiring antibiotics, after a defeat in New York’s Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack, his first loss in 5 career starts there. He let up in the stretch, giving up the lead and finishing third against an unassuming field.

A few days after that astonishing upset, his trainer, Todd Pletcher, reported that Uncle Mo, sired by Indian Charlie, had a gastrointestinal infection, which required treatment with antibiotics, as Uncle Mo kept on working toward the Kentucky Derby. His response to the antibiotics was good, but his appetite was still poor and he experienced some weight loss. The fear is that he might have other medical issues besides the infection.

Of course, the trainer was very disappointed, as Uncle Mo is such a good horse, and he looks so good, but the most important thing claimed the trainer, is what is best for his horse. The trainer indicated that he wouldn’t feel good about putting Uncle Mo into a race when he isn’t at his best.

A disappointment for some, it’s good to see that they are putting the interests of this beautiful horse before their own desires.

Uncle Mo will surely have many opportunities in the future to run in good races where his chances of winning will be much improved, when he is completely healthy.
