Who would have ever thought that one of the best, if not the very best golfer in the world still, who held the number 1 ranking in the competitive world of golf for 281 weeks straight, could now be running out of cash?
Having been a position where he made as much as $30,000 per putt, he would have had to go through a lot of money to be in this position – it’s hard to believe such a rumor.
Yahoo Sports reports that Fortune Magazine wonders if he could be in a tight cash situation. On one hand, it would be understandable to find that his cash flow is dwindling, especially after paying out around $10 million in a monetarily devastating divorce settlement, and losing endorsements that in the past made up around 90% of his income.
On the other hand, he did keep about half of his fortune, plus he did have a reasonably substantial income though not nearly as much as the $10.9 million he made in 2007, or the $5.8 million in 2008, or his 2009 income which brought in another $10.4 million.
After Woods’ 2009 season, Tiger ran into the widely publicized trouble with his marriage which turned off a number of his sponsors. In 2010 Tiger only earned approximately $1.3 million – still a substantial sum, especially added to the existing millions in his pot, even after the settlement.
Tiger Woods still has 3 major sponsors – Nike, EA Sports (who created Tiger’s video game) and a Japanese company – Kowa. Apparently the Nike endorsement dropped in 2010 from $20 million to $10 million. This year Woods quit IMG, his agency – IMG didn’t protest his leaving, it has been said, because of the huge decrease in earnings from endorsements.
There is no doubt that Woods has the potential, phenomenal talent and still being young, is capable of bouncing back to play as the effective golfer he is famed to be. The injury he has been dealing with has prevented him from playing up to “par” but no doubt after healing, both physically and mentally, he will get back to winning and drawing in the big pay checks once again, putting to rest the rumors about his flattened pocketbook.
It will be good to see a healthy and happy Tiger Woods back on the green carpet, flourishing once again, and putting all the negativity behind him!
