Rory McIlroy rewrites history by becoming the youngest player ever to win the US Open, and the second youngest player ever to win a major championship behind Tiger Woods.
Rory McIlroy didn’t want the beginning of his legacy to be remembered by the crash and burn performance at the Masters. Rory was -12, and had a four shot lead over second. He shot +1 on the front nine, then burned on the back nine shooting +7, for a +8 on the day in the Masters.
He was the sure favored to win the Masters heading into the final day, but finished 19th. Schwartzel, Day, Scott, and Woods could smell blood, and were chasing the green jacket.
Schwartzel shot -6, and finished the tourney at -14 and took home the prize trophy. Day & Scott tied for second and Woods finished 4th.
The US Open would be a different story, or would it?
The 22 year old Irishman, McIlroy, started day one with a three shot lead, much like he did in the Masters.
He lead day one, day two, and day three, but this time he would finish it off in stellar fashion shooting a -2 (69).
So, how good was Rory’s performance at the US Open (Congressional)? If you were to combine the scores of the last ten US Open champions they would equal -14. Rory shot -16.
He won by 8 shots over Jason Day, and Day shot the best US Open score in the last 26 US Opens, with the exception of Rory.
Rory moved into the #4 spot in the world Golf Rankings and should be able to move to the #1 spot with a few more solid performances.
McDowell said: “He’s the best player I’ve ever seen”. McDowell never got to play with Tiger in his glory days.
The kids is awesome, so congratulations to a big win Mr. McIlroy.
