Thunderstorms were in the forecast when the 2011 US Open was about to begin, but as blessing would have it, they were held at bay and the US Open got under way at the Congressional Country Club.
After a total blunder in the Masters fourth round earlier this season, the story of the day again was Rory McIlroy.
Rory played exceptional golf in the first round of the US Open, hitting a lot of fairways and hitting 17 greens in regulation.
Now that’s how you win the US Open, take the pressure off of your putting, and put a lot of pressure on other players.
How did others respond to the pressure? The number one, two, and three in the world combined for a +10 for the day.
Phil Mickelson managed to shoot a +3, even though he was all over the course, and once even found himself trying to reach the green from on the wrong hole’s fairway.
Rory, shot six under par (-6, 65), and without a bogey all day. He obviously got his big game jitters out in the Masters.
Rory has a three shot lead over the rest of the crowd. Behind him is Schwartzel & Yang at -3, then there is a six way tie for fourth at -2 which includes Sergio Garcia.
This is the third time that Rory has held the lead after the first round in a major.
Rory will tee of at 7:55 AM on Friday, round #2.
