After all the talk about Mickelson, Woods, and Martin Kaymer, who would have thought that 21 year old, Rory McIlroy, would shoot an opening day 65, and be on top the Masters Leaderboard.
He is followed closely by Y.E. Yang and Matt Kuchar.
Up until today, McIlroy’s best round at the Masters was a 70, and he missed the cut last year. His game has been getting better and better though.
McIlroy runs hot sometimes, and when he does, he can shoot low. He shot a 63 in a majors at St. Andrews last year, which was only the 24th, 63 in the history of major championship golf.
This is why he is the #9 ranked player in the world right now, behind Stricker and Woods.
McIlroy had 3 straight birdies on holes 2-4 in the Masters today. This gave him some great momentum for the day.
He picked up one more birdie on the 9th that put him at 4 under. He picked up another birdie on the 11th, then he made 3 straight birdies again from holes 13-15 to move him to -7 where he finished the day.
Y.E. Yang, actually moved to -7 under like McIlroy by birding the 16th, but dropped a shot on the 17th and and the 18th and he finished the day at a -5 under 67. Yang, the 5′ 9″ player from South Korea, didn’t start the day hot, just even for the first 3 holes, then he birdied the 4th, 6th, 8th, and the 9th.
This put him at 4 under on the front 9. He bogeyed the 11th, but an eagle on the 13th, put him at -5. He then birdied the 15th & 16th, but dropped a shot on the 17th & 18th.
Matt Kuchar, who shot his career best in the Masters today with a 68, is sitting in 3rd and is the 10th ranked player in the world right behind McIlroy.
