The Fighting Phillies down 4-2 to start the 9th inning, rally back and get the win, 5-4, over the Houston Astros.
The rally ended with J. Mayberry Jr. singling to deep center, bringing in Francisco to score.
It was a great day for Mayberry Jr. who had his parents in attendance, of whom his dad was a major league, 2 time All Star player.
It was J. Rollins that got the comeback train rolling for the Phillies with a single. He was followed by another single by R. Howard to right center.
After a pop up out by Ibanez, Rollins stole third base. On a single to left center by Francisco, Rollins scored, and Howard was moved to second base.
The hitting continued when Ruiz’s single to left field moved Howard to third and Francisco to second.
Then Howard was brought home when Valdez singled to left, on a hit that also moved Franciso to third and Ruiz to second.
Then big boy Mayberry Jr., singled to deep center and brought Francisco home for the win.
The Phillies had 10 hits for the game, 6 of which came in the 9th inning.
The Phillies showed us that when they get on a roll, they can come back from waaay down. This was a great confidence and momentum booster to start the season with.
Phillies pitcher Halladay, who won the National League Cy Young Award last year, allowed 1 run and 5 hits in 6 innings. He also had 6 strikeouts.
Even though they had to win from a comeback, this was a good game for the Phillies, who would like to win as many games as they can while missing 5 time All Star Utley and closer B. Lidge to injuries.
Plus, sometimes, a win is a win. This is especially true on opening day at home. They have some kinks to work out that’s for sure.
Overall, it was a great game for the fans and the Phillies, as it was a sellout crowd at Citizens Bank Park of 45,237.
