We didn’t have to wait long to see our first big upset of the tourney. Morehead State, the #13 seed in the Southwest bracket knocked off the #4 seed Louisville Cardinals 62-61.
The Morehead game ended in such fashion that many people didn’t even realize that there was another pretty big upset too, Richmond sent Vandy packing.
Richmond is the #12 seed in what should maybe be called the “upset bracket”… the Southwest Bracket where Morehead State did its damage.
Vandy was the #5 seed, but their NCAA tourney is over for this year. The final score was 69-66. Richmond’s leading scorer was Kevin Anderson. He played all 40 minutes and had 25 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assist. He was 4 of 9 from the 3 point line.
This will make for an interesting match-up in round #3 of the Southwest bracket because Morehead State and Richmond will face off.
One of them will be in the Sweet 16. The game will be at 5:00 pm on Saturday.
WVU beat Clemson as expected, but the #4 seed Univ. Of Kentucky had some challenges with Princeton. They snuck out the win 59-57.
Princeton spread the ball around and had 4 guys in double digits.
Knight who couldn’t buy a bucket all game for Kentucky, drove the lane and picked up the game winning layup in the final 2 seconds of the game.
The Univ. of Kentucky will face WVU in the next round at 12:00 pm on Saturday.
In the West bracket, Cincy handled Mizzou pretty well and won 78-63. The #3 seed, UConn, beat Bucknell 81-52.
UConn will now face the #6 seed Cincy. This should be a good game. Many experts and analyst are picking UConn to be in the final four, but I don’t think Cincy is listening to them.
The #2 seed San Diego State who is having a stellar year, and kept on rolling yesterday by defeating N. Colorado 68-50.
San Diego State will face the #7 seed Temple who barely pulled off their win against the #10 seeded Penn St. Nitanny Lions.
The Southeast bracket was the first bracket to finish all of their first round games already.
Pitt beat UNC Asheville who made a stellar come back in the “first four” game, 74-51. They needed to show some strength in that game as their conference tourney didn’t go so well.
They will face the #8 seed Butler. Butler has been known to play “upsetter” in the NCAA tourney, so Pitt needs to be on full attack if they want to win this game.
Kansas St. beat Utah St. by 5 and will face the Wisconsin Badgers who defeated Belmont in the second round.
Kansas St. is the #5 seed and Wisconsin is the #4 seed. It’s always fun to watch seeds that are close and coming off of a win. This game could go either way.
Even though Gonzaga was the #11 seed, it’s Gonzaga. We expect them to bring it every time they get on the court. Yesterday was no different when they knocked off the #6 seed St. John’s 86-71. It wasn’t even a close game.
Which makes their next game one to watch. They will be playing the #3 seed BYU at 7:45 on Saturday.
If Gonzaga can slow down Jimmer Fredette (BYU), who had to play 40 minutes against Wofford, they can have a great chance at winning this game. Jimmer had 32 against Wofford.
BYU showed weakness in their defense by giving up 66 to Wofford… an unranked team.
Gonzaga can light it up with many different players.
UCLA snuck past Michigan St. by 2, but it will be tough game against the Southeast bracket’s #2 seed, the Florida Gators. No one is talking much about Florida, but they could quietly sneak right on into the sweet 16.
If they can win they will face the winner of the Gonzaga vs. BYU game.
Well, these are the NCAA tournament scores for the first half of the second round, I am sure there will be some more shockers today.
