For college basketball fans that celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, there is double excitement for the holiday. The first round of the men’s NCAA tourney is over the the top 64 teams are set to begin tomorrow on St. Patrick’s Day.
Notre Dame is hoping that the luck of the Irish continues on till Friday because they don’t have their first game until then. They are the #2 seed in the Southwest bracket and are facing the #15 seed, Akron at 1:30 pm.
Tonight Univ. Texas San Antonio knocked off Alabama St. 70 to 61.
UTSA actually had a 48-21 lead at the half, but allowed ALA St. to score 40 in the second half to their 22.
Melvin Johnson III was the leading scorer for UTSA with 29. He also had 3 rebounds. Six of his points came from the 3 point line and 9 points from the free throw line. The team will need him to be hot again Friday to pull off a big upset.
In the second game tonight, the VCU Rams took down the USC Trojans 59-46. It was even at the half, but USC just couldn’t keep up with the half time changes.
Jamie Skeen lead the Rams in scoring with 16. He also added 9 rebounds, 1 assist, and a block to his stats.
Joi Fontan lead USC in scoring with 14.
UTSA will now play on Friday against the East bracket’s #1 seed, the Ohio State Buckeyes at 4:30. Saying this game will be tough is an understatement. They will need to ride the momentum of this game and have everybody working together in order to create an upset in this game.
The VCU Rams will move on to play George Town, the #6 seed, at 9:45 pm on Friday. VCU will be the #11 seed in the Southwest bracket.
Yesterday the Clemson Tigers and UNC Ashville advanced out of the “first four” to the second round.
