Gael Monfils is one of the most emotionally driven tennis players in the game, and when he missed two match points in the 4th set, it seemed his emotions were going to get the best of him…
But he got it together and came back to win over David Ferrer.
The 4th set started on Sunday and Monfils trailed the 0-2 in the set, but the play was suspended to Monday because of darkness.
Monfils took advantage of this opportunity by recovering from a slightly sprained ankle, and won the 5th set to give him the win.
Monfils won the first, third, and 5th sets; all were won by exactly 2 games. The second and fourth sets that he lost, he lost by 4 games or more.
This is the kind of emotional roller coaster that Monfils rides. He plays in spurts, and when he is on, he is on, but when he is off, it’s hard for him to get a win.
For Ferrer, it would have been his first Roland Garros semi-final; but in the end, nerves got the best of Ferrer who made a few unforced errors in the 5th set that cost him the match.
