LSU falls right behind a number of schools this year hit with recruiting violations, and are being penalized by the NCAA.
Louisiana State University (LSU) will lose four total scholarships on a one year probation, lose 10% of their amount of on-campus visits allowed, and are hit with restrictions on recruiting phone calls.
LSU troubles came from improperly arranging housing and transportation for a player (Hicks) and for making and receiving over 3,600 phone calls from non-coaching staff members to high school players, their relatives, and coaches.
The NCAA rule is that there can’t be more than one call per week to a prospective recruit.
The NCAA stated that the penalty would have been much worse if it wasn’t for the LSU compliance department “cooperating and being proactive”.
LSU has to inform recruits that it is on probation, and why, when talking to recruits. McCarthy, the assistant coach that was the key player in assisting Hicks, lost his job at LSU and has restrictions placed on him by the NCAA on his ability to work for any football program related to the NCAA.
McCarthy has to enroll in a NCAA rules seminar, and has restrictions on phone contact with recruits for one year. McCarthy has taken a position with the WRA (Receiver Academy).
McCarthy’s side of the story: “…I disagree with the NCAA’s findings and the manner in which I have been characterized.”
