With only 8 shots on goal, Germany beat France 4-2 to take the number one spot in the Women’s Groups A at the Women’s World Cup on Tuesday.
Germany took a 2-0 lead in the game when they scored in the 25th minute (Kerstin Garefrekes) followed by a second score just seven minutes later in the 32nd minute by Inka Grings.
France stayed in it by getting a score of their own in the 56th minute by Marie-Laure Delle (2-1). But Germany wasn’t having it, and Inka Grings got her second goal of the game in the 68th minute to increase the lead back to two points (3-1).
Laura Georges gave France a little more hope by scoring a goal in the 72nd minute, but like Germany had been doing all game, they answered with another score late in the game by Celia Okoyino da Mbabi.
France had 9 shots, 5 of which were on goal, and played a very aggressive game which lead to 16 fouls, 3 yellow cards, and 1 red card.
Borussia Park was sold out, and the game was played in front of more than 45,800 screaming fans.
Germany is now atop the Group A standings (3-0), followed by France (2-1), Nigeria (1-2), and Canada (0-3).
Canada lost to Nigeria 0-1 on Tuesday following France’s loss to Germany.
