The Gators were tied 1-1 with the Gamecocks, with bases loaded and no outs in the 9th inning, and they failed to get a run.
This left the door open for the Gamecocks, who ran through it in the 11th inning to win game #1 of the College World Series (CWS).
It was great pitching by both teams, giving up only 1 run through regulation play. It was like watching a beautifully played chess match.
With all of the great plays made in the game, they will be overshadowed in the end by the errors (3) and missed scoring opportunities that really lead to the loss by Florida.
The go ahead run by the Gamecocks was scored off of an overthrow at second, and a underthrow to third. The Gamecocks runner was able to just jog right over home plate.
Then the missed opportunity by the Gators to close the game out in the 9th, followed by an opportunity to advance a runner on second base in the 11th for the tie, all lead to the demise of the Gators in game #1.
They will be back though. There were so many bright moments in this game and they are a great team.
That isn’t to say that the Gamecocks, who are in a tie for the longest win streak in CWS history (10), are going to give it up. They would love nothing more than to put this series away next game.
Wingo (Gamecocks) was once again the star of the game, with the game tying RBI single, and the diving grab at second, followed by the home plate throw out to keep the lead.
The #4 Gamecocks will defend the National Championship against the #2 Florida Gators tonight in the best of three series.
