Nepal-China (NEWSTABULOUS) – Apa Sherpa is a mountain climbing machine.
Appropriately nicknamed ‘Super Sherpa,’ yesterday he broke his own record for most Mount Everest summits, now an impressive 21 total successful climbs to the top of the world.
Apa and his team began their approach to the summit earlier than the other expedition teams on the mountain in order to dodge the crowded conditions that are expected today and tomorrow.
Because of weather patterns and conditions, climbers are only given a very small window of time every year in which to make a reasonable summit attempt.
51-year-old Apa has climbed the mountain once every year since his first climb in 1990. He insists that he climbs for ‘work’ and not for ‘adventure.’ The commercial expeditions that he guides serve multiple purposes: one is to escort clients safely to the top of the mountain; the other is to clean up.
Years of irresponsible waste management by preceding expeditions has left Everest littered with tons of garbage; Apa and colleagues on his Eco-Everest Expeditions have removed several thousand pounds of this garbage from off the mountain and intend to continue to do so.
His conscientiousness and respect for the delicate alpine environment have galvanized his reputation as a mountain ambassador and icon in the world of mountain climbing.
