Conference Shakeup; Two New Men’s Hockey Leagues; Big Ten’s Playing Hockey

The top six men’s (NCAA) hockey teams are forming a new conference that will play in the 2013-2014 school year.

There is a news conference scheduled for later today in Colorado that will provide the details of the joint agreement and new conference.

The teams that will play in the new hockey conference together are: Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota, Colorado College, Miami Ohio, and last year’s NCAA champion Minnesota Duluth.

There has been a lot of shake up going on in men’s hockey lately, as recently the Big Ten announced that they will start a new hockey conference in two seasons also.

Teams like Minnesota and Wisconsin will come over from the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), and they will be joined by Michigan, Ohio State, and Michigan St (who will be coming from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA).

Then Penn State is going to launch a brand new program and join the Big Ten conference also.

This is good news for hockey fans and high school athletes who are interested in playing hockey at the collegiate level, but not good the the 50 year old WCHA.

In two years after these new conferences are formed, the WCHA will only have five teams in the conference unless they can get some fresh blood. Those teams would be: Minnesota St., Michigan Tech, St. Cloud State, Mankato, Bemidji State, and Alaska Anchorage.
