Disaster struck the Celina softball team the morning of the State Championship game when their star pitcher, Katelyn Drummond, woke up with one eye swollen shut.
In high school it’s hard to win without your star players, especially State, and especially your pitcher because teams just usually aren’t deep enough on the bench.
Katelyn Drummond woke up with what the training staff believed to be a staff infection in her eye. Wow, we have made serious advancement in medicine, because by game time the trainer had gotten the swelling done enough that Drummond could take the mound and play the game.
Great job training staff, it was their efforts that helped lead Celina to a 5-1 win and the State Championship Title. Drummond played the entire game, and even finished the last batter with a strikeout.
Carter won MVP for Celina though. She had 3 runs scored, had 3 singles, and an RBI. It was a perfect ending to a great season and it built off of her walk off home run blast in the semi-final game that went 11 innings.
Celina will be a force to be reckoned with next year, as they only lose two players. Mongillo being one of those returning players. She was responsible for bringing two to the runs across the plate that lead to the 5-2 State Championship Victory.
