After a disappointing loss to the Florida Gators in the Sweet 16, 83-74, hopefully winning the AP Player of the Year Award will put a sweet smile on Jimmer’s face.
BYU beat St. John’s and Gonzaga to get to the Sweet 16.
In his final game of his college career against Florida, the senior had 32 points, 2 rebounds, and 5 assist. He started off the game hot with a couple deep three-pointers, but went cold.
Jimmer Fredette, lead the nation in scoring and the BYU Cougars to the Sweet 16 this year. That’s quite a finish to a very nice college career that will lead to the NBA.
It will be interesting to see if his height will play a role in the draft. He is a 6′ 3″ shooting guard. He is a shooter, and he knows how to put the ball in basket, all teams need that.
BYU won the Mountain West Conference regular season title, but lost the Conference tourney final to San Diego State who entered the NCAA tourney the #2 seed in the West bracket behind Duke.
Jimmer averaged 28.5 points per game. From the national media panel of 65 that selects weekly AP top 25, Jimmer received 48 votes.
Kemba Walker from UConn came in second with 11 votes. The NCAA tourney didn’t affect the voting as it was done before the tourney began.
Nolan Smith from Duke and Jared Sullinger from the Buckeyes came in 3rd and 4th respectively.
Jimmer will go down in history as the first BYU player to win the AP National Player Of The Year Award.
