Bjorn & Lewis Shoot 65; Glover, Jimenez, and Simpson In The Hunt

Thursday was the first round of the 2011 British Open where Thomas Bjorn & Tom Lewis’ (a) rounds of 65 were the tops on the day.

Glover, Jimenez, and Simpson all shot a first round 66 and will be breathing hard down Bjorn’s & Lewis’ neck on day two.

Bjorn, the 40 year old Dane, had a near flawless day, with only two bogeys. One was on the last hole on the front nine, and the other was on the last hole on the back nine.

He had seven birdies on the day and nine pars.

Tom Lewis, the 20 year old English amateur and winner of the Boy’s Amateur Championship at Royal St. George, shot one of the lowest Open rounds by an amateur ever (65).

Lewis only had two bogeys on the day, but it was his seven birdies that stole the show. He bogeyed holes 11 and 13, but bounced back with four straight birdies and a par to finish the round.

Lucas Glover, the American golfer, had shot an even front nine, but had four birdies on the back nine. He birdied the final three holes to bring it home.

Jimenez took a different route, he shot a bogey free round, had two birdies on the front nine, and two birdies on the back nine. It was a clean and smooth performance.

Webb Simpson took a very similar approach as Jimenez. Simpson shot a perfect par first nine, then picked up four birdies on the back nine (no bogeys) to shoot his 66.
