Bartoli Defeats Defending Champ; Serena Williams 4th Rd. Exit

Serena Williams wasn’t even expected to play at this year’s Wimbledon…

She had been battling to get back into tennis (and to stay alive) for almost a year now, from two foot surgeries and blood clots in her lungs, but she did it.

Once in Wimbledon, no one expected her to do very well, but the two time defending champ defied the odds again by winning her first match on center court, that was filled with more emotion than she has ever shown on court before.

Serena Williams went on to win two more matches, but against the tough Bartoli in the fourth round, Wimbledon graciously came to an end.

There were two other eliminations in the fourth round, Venus Williams, and the #1 ranked player in the world, Caroline Wozniacki.

Wozniacki, who has yet to win a grand slam title or reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, needs to figure out a way to get one under her belt.

She lost in the fourth round to 24th seeded Dominika Cibulkova. This will stand to question her world #1 ranking. She has yet to win a Grand Slam and is eliminated by low seeded players on the big stages.

Serena lost in two straight sets, but not without a fight. The sets went 6-3, 7-6 (6).

Pironkova had Venus Williams’ number again this year. The 23 year old knocked out Venus in last year’s Wimbledon to advance to her first ever Grand Slam semi-final. That confidence is what helped her to beat Venus again this year.
