Embarrassment Stopped Them From Excelling in Sports
July 16, 2009 by Kimberly Edwards
What? You’re going to let embarassment stop you from playing sports?
You’re afraid to do something wrong? Well, we all do something wrong when playing sports – DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT! Say, “My bad!” and move on…just as everyone else will.
I think it’s most worrisome to our own selves…no one else is as concerned with our bobbled play or move than we are!!! We are always our own worst critic!
Yesterday, while enjoying some snacks on our porch in Dallas, a teenage boy was skateboarding down the street…We were hardly paying attention to him, except that we knew he was skateboarding.
He accidentally slipped off the board and was so flustered by a tiny mishap, and of course, thought we were all watching and secretly criticizing, that he stopped riding his skateboard and was mumbling cuss words to himself under his breath!
It really wasn’t that big of a deal – So what!!! We’ve all done it – it was no big deal, but he let that “embarassment” keep him from having fun and getting better!
I hate to see it when girls get to “that age” where sports are no longer “cool”! Sports are ALWAYS cool, and when you realize that, which everyone does, you’ll wish you’d have stayed in that sport. Why? Because it would be so COOL to still be playing it!
I don’t understand why “teenage girls” think it’s “cooler” to not be good at sports – that also goes when thinking it’s not “cool” to be super smart in the classroom – IT IS!!! The kids that make fun of you or you think would make fun of you, often won’t and often are just embarrassed at their own short comings! That’s the truth of the matter!
If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again! If you fall, dust yourself off and try again!
The only failure is not even trying!!! You can never accomplish anything you never set out to do!
What sets you apart from a professional athlete? They’re professionals at falling down and getting back up in order to succeed! They’re the pros! You think they never screwed up playing their sport? Au contraire! They are successes because of and despite their failures!
Get on out there, have fun, don’t take yourself too seriously and work hard! It’s always worth it!
