Don’t Underestimate The Girls!

September 30, 2008 by Kimberly Edwards

Texas A&M Aggies -Women's- Dynasty Football JerseyWhen it comes to sports, it seems to be a “normal” thing for “guys” to underestimate the girls and their athletic abilities…LOL…

For example, this past weekend, I arrived in Dallas to visit my husband. Him and his friends play flag football on Saturday mornings. So, I went with him to watch, thinking the other girlfriends and wives would come too.

While we were waiting for everyone to arrive, I thought I would get my run in, as I was training for a 5 km run for Breast Cancer that I ran a few weeks ago, and have since continued on with the training for fitness.

So, I ran my 5 km, only to find out that they were missing a man to play. Kenney, being my husband and also being well aware of my athletic abilities, offered me up as a fill-in until someone else arrived.

The other team agreed, as I was just a fill-in for both teams temporarily.

LOL…What they didn’t know is that I am a pretty good, all-round athlete still…

I started out as an all-time defensive player for both teams, as I rotated…and did pretty well. I didn’t get much real play as I was just covering a man that they didn’t pass to as much. I held my own.

Another man showed up, and so Kenney then offered to take me as their player…They agreed hastily, of course thinking they were going to stomp our team since there was a girl of “weaker ability” on it.

What they weren’t counting on was my football knowledge, mostly from watching NFL with my hubby and playing uncountable hours of Madden on the PS2…LOL…

Moreso, they weren’t counting on my speed or ability to catch the pigskin…LOL…I was a softball pitcher in college and played ball all my life…I can catch the ball and throw a tight spiral to boot…LOL…

Anyway, I scored 3 touchdowns (1/3 of all our points), caught a few conversions, blocked a pass, and did a heck of a job blocking my man…

Our quarterback called me the “fantasty sleeper of the week”…If you play Fantasty Football, you’ll know what I’m talking about…

The other team was REALLY upset, I think moreso because there was a girl on the team…LOL…

We all got together to watch Sunday NFL Football and were talking about how I played…The girls were impressed at how well I did, listening to the guys…

Immediately after that conversation, one of the guys on the other team asked, “When do you leave Kim?”…LOL LOL LOL…

Our team wants to know if I’ll be here this weekend too…so we can stomp them again! LOL…

NEVER underestimate your female counterpart! You have NO IDEA! LOL

P.S. Check out this neat book I found about Women’s Football:

A Beautiful Game: Internaitonal Perspectives on Women's Football A Beautiful Game: International Perspectives on Women’s Football

divdivFIFA, the world governing body of association football, declared ‘The Future is Feminine’ in a 1995 press release. Since then, football has been claimed as the fastest growing participation sport for women globally. An estimated twenty million women play the game around the world, and that figure is on the rise. However, the history of women’s participation goes back to at least 1895 and in our enthusiasm for the present, the memory of that longer history can be overlooked or forgotten. A Beautiful Game, supported by a two-year FIFA/ CIES João Havelange Research Scholarship, examines contemporary women’s football internationally, with case studies from England, the United States, China and Australia. In each case study, Jean Williams considers the evolution of the women’s game against a backdrop of issues, such as media representation, access to facilities, lack of resources, coaching, sponsorship, talent identification, training and professionalisation. T he author examines contentious questions, such as why women are absent from the highest levels of professional football, combining source material from archives, oral history and artefacts. A Beautiful Game analyses the status and image of the women’s game from the late nineteenth century to the shifting social values of the present.
