Interval Training and the Reality of Track and Field
July 5, 2007 by Kenney
The greatest runners in track and field know that they must do interval training if they expect to win. What is interval training? It is conditioning your body to run at a certain speed for short amounts of distances to simulate the actual race.
For instance if you run the mile run and you want to run a four-minute mile then each quarter mile must be 60 seconds. And each 220 must be 30 seconds. Therefore it makes sense to practice running at those speeds. In interval training you run shorter distances over and over again at or near race pace.
Now it is not easy and most runners cannot do it every single day in training, as a matter of fact generally they may only do this two or three days per week and then rest. The rest of the time they will run longer distances to put in the endurance training with perhaps a few short intervals as part of their day; well if you can call that resting?
Training to run fast and beat the competition in track and field is not easy. There is no easy way to train to win. But if you can condition your body to run at a certain speed and give it the endurance training it needs to hold those speeds for as long as possible you stand a much better chance of victory and beating the competition. Please consider this in 2006.
