20 Year Old Wins Daytona 500

Trevor Bayne, driver of car #21, becomes the youngest ever Daytona 500 winner. He also brings the Woods Brother Racing team it’s first Sprint Cup win since 2001 and first Daytona 500 win in 35 years.

Carl Edwards was pushing hard to overtake Trevor, but the 20 year old held off the veteran driver in the overtime finish.

Bayne is now the youngest winner of the Daytona 500 and the 2nd youngest winner of the NASCAR’s top division.

The Wood Brothers team is 58 years old and has one of NASCAR’s oldest visionaries in Eddie Wood. The team just needed a fresh start and the 20 year old and “throw back” paint job on the #21 Ford car was just the order that they needed. Wood’s said: “it just felt right”.

The Wood Brother’s racing team now has 5 Daytona 500 wins, but this is the first since 1976. The last person to win the Daytona 500 for the Wood Brother’s team was Pearson who was recently inducted into the Hall Of Fame.

In only his 2nd Sprint Cup start, Bayne, the now youngest driver to win this race, was also a part of a few other records… 74 lead changes and 22 different leaders. The only one that mattered for Bayne though was the one that put him in the “drivers seat” on the road to victory.

This week was also the 10th anniversary of the death of Earnhardt.
